Get Class 5 licenses

Class 5 driver's license is the standard license for driving personal vehicles like cars, vans, and light trucks. It allows you to drive a 2-axle single motor vehicle, a motor home without air brakes (unless you hold an air brake certificate), and tow a trailer with one or more axles if it doesn't have air brakes.

Book your Motorcycle Class 6 Road Test

Class 6 license is the motorcycle license. It allows you to operate motorcycles, mopeds, and three-wheeled motorcycles. You can also drive Class 5 vehicles as a learner with a Class 6 GDL (Graduated Driver License). To get a full Class 6 license, you need to have a Class 6 GDL for two years.

Alberta Class 5 Licence

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Have had a Class 7 learner’s licence with at least one year of driving experience;
  • If you are under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or legal guardian; and
  • Complete vision assessment at the registry office.
  • You must arrive 30 minutes prior to your road test appointment. Please check in with a registry clerk who will verify your eligibility to take the road test. Failure to arrive ahead of your scheduled appointment time may result in your appointment being cancelled with no refund. There is no grace period to begin the exam.
  • All outstanding fines on your motor vehicle file must be paid ahead of your road test. If the fine payment is made online within the last 5 days, proof of payment will be required. If you are unable to satisfy this requirement, the road test will not proceed, no refund will be issued and you will be responsible for paying for a new road test. You are encouraged to pay any fines on your motor vehicle file at least 24 hours ahead of the test to prevent delays.
  • If you are under 18 years old and applying for a driver’s licence your parent or legal guardian with proof of guardianship, must accompany you to a registry to sign a consent form on your licence application . If you are bringing a legal guardian other than a birth or step parent, please contact the registry to determine what documentation will be required.
  • You must produce a valid Alberta Learner’s or Driver’s Licence – you may provide a temporary licence with an additional piece of government issued photo identification like a passport, permanent resident card or Nexus card.
  • If you are reinstating your licence, you may require additional testing or documentation. Please visit our office in person prior to your road test if you are unsure of the suspension reinstatement conditions. If you fail to confirm eligibility prior to the road test, you will not be eligible to reschedule or receive a refund. You will be responsible to pay for a new test.
  • You must meet all conditions on your driver’s licence (eg: bring your glasses if the licence has a condition code A).
  • Audio and/or video recordings of any type are not permitted during road tests.
  • You must meet the minimum age requirements and all requirements for the licence class you are being tested for. If you are not eligible for the road test, the road test will not be rescheduled and a refund will not be issued. You will be responsible for paying for a new test.

Class 6 – Motorcycle Licence

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Pass a Class 6 knowledge test within the last 12 months;
  • Have a minimum a Class 7 learner’s licence for at least a year;
  • If you are under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or guardian; and
  • Complete vision assessment at registry office.

Senior’s Discounts for Road Testing

The Alberta government now provides discounts for Albertans that are 65 years or older. If you will be 65 or older on the date of your road test, you are eligible for a 25% discount on your fees. Vehicle/Equipment Requirements:

Class 5

  • A current original certificate of registration or digital download of vehicle registration. Photocopies and electronic copies displayed on a mobile device are acceptable. Pictures of registration are not acceptable.
  • Valid insurance, in the form of a Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card (pink card) paper, photocopied, or electronic versions are acceptable. Pictures of insurance are not acceptable.
  • The vehicle must have enough fuel, windshield wiper fluid and other fluids for the test.
  • You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle including functioning:
    • Headlights;
    • Brake lights – including high-centre mount brake light, if equipped;
    • Signal lights;
    • Horn;
    • Speedometer;
    • Brakes;
    • Seatbelts;
    • Vehicle controls;
    • Windshield wipers;
    • Exhaust system; and
    • Windows and doors; and
    • Your vehicle may be refused if the airbag or SRS light is illuminated.
  • Unobstructed windshields and mirrors. Vision through the vehicle’s glass must not be significantly obstructed or obscured. A cracked windshield or side glass must be evaluated from inside the vehicle for its impact on outward vision. Driver Examiners may discontinue the road test if they feel safety is compromised by limited visibility.
  • Front side windows and windshield must be free of non-factory tint.
  • Tires must be in good condition with all lug nuts in place.
  • Clean and uncluttered passenger seat for the examiner.
  • A rental vehicle may be available to rent for your test.
  • No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
  • If you provide a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it. Rental contract must match the name of the individual taking the road test. If you have a Class 7 licence, you may not be able to rent a vehicle in your name, no one else may rent the vehicle. Vehicles from a ride/car share company are not permitted for road tests.
  • A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
  • Vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device must only be used for Road Tests when the client is in the Ignition Interlock Program.

  • If you do not meet eligibility requirements, do not have required documentation or if the vehicle you provide for your road test is deemed unsafe you are not eligible for a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, please visit us in person to confirm your eligibility.
  • Driver examiners may cancel a road test on short notice or onsite due to poor weather conditions as determined by the driver examiner. If your exam is cancelled due to poor or unsafe weather conditions you will be able to reschedule the test at no additional fee. If you are not comfortable completing your road test in weather or road conditions deemed acceptable by the driver examiner, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • Driver examiners can cancel the road test if they feel that you are unsafe to drive due to a physical or cognitive impairment or suspect that you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. If a test is cancelled for these reasons, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If the Registry Agent is unable to provide a road test for a booked appointment, you will have the option of rescheduling.
